How to Switch Energy Suppliers: A Step-by-Step Guide
Updated over a month ago

Switching energy suppliers can seem daunting, but it's actually a straightforward process. By following these simple steps, you can potentially save money and find a tariff that better suits your needs.

1. Gather Your Information

Before you start comparing tariffs, you'll need:

  • Your current energy bill: This will show your current supplier, tariff, and energy consumption.

  • Your address: Ensure you have the correct postcode.

  • Your Meter Point Administration Number (MPAN): Found on your energy bill, this unique number identifies your electricity supply.

  • Your Gas Supply Number (GSN): Also found on your bill, this identifies your gas supply.

  • Your Meter Point Reference Number (MPRN): This is another crucial number that identifies your gas supply point. You'll find it on your gas bill.

2. Compare Tariffs

Use an Ofgem-accredited price comparison website to compare tariffs from different suppliers. These websites make it easy to compare prices and find the best deals based on your energy consumption and preferences.

Tips for Comparing:

  • Consider your energy usage: Look for tariffs that match your consumption habits.

  • Check the tariff type: Fixed, variable, or dual fuel? Choose the one that suits your needs.

  • Look for exit fees: Some tariffs have fees for leaving before the contract ends.

  • Read customer reviews: See what other customers say about the supplier.

3. Choose Your New Supplier

Once you've found a tariff you like, simply select the supplier and follow the instructions in our results table! In some cases, you can apply directly through MoneySuperMarket. If we can't switch you directly, you can contact the supplier directly online or by phone.

4. The Switching Process

Your new supplier will handle most of the switching process. They will:

  • Contact your old supplier: Inform them of the switch.

  • Arrange the transfer: Coordinate the switch with the relevant energy networks.

  • Take a final meter reading: Ensure accurate billing from your old supplier.

Faster Switching: Thanks to the "faster switching scheme" introduced by Ofgem, the switching process can now be completed in as little as 5 working days, making it quicker and easier than ever to change suppliers.

5. Sit Back and Relax

The switching process usually takes around 21 days to complete, but with the faster switching scheme, it can be much quicker. You shouldn't experience any interruption to your energy supply during this time.

Common Concerns:

  • Will my energy supply be interrupted? No, your energy supply will remain uninterrupted throughout the switching process.

  • What if I have a prepayment meter? You can still switch! Your new supplier will guide you through the process, which may involve getting a new meter.

  • What about Economy 7 tariffs? Many suppliers offer Economy 7 tariffs, so you should be able to find a suitable option when comparing.

If you encounter any issues during the switching process, contact your new supplier directly for assistance.

Remember: Switching energy suppliers is your right, and it's often the best way to ensure you're getting the best possible deal on your energy bills.
