Your data rights

Overview

As a MoneySuperMarket customer, UK data protection law (the UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018) gives you several rights over the personal data we hold about you. This article explains each one and how to use it.

If you just want to stop using MoneySuperMarket, see How to close your MoneySuperMarket account instead — it's quicker, though it doesn't delete your data on its own.

Your rights at a glance

  • Access — get a copy of the personal data we hold about you.

  • Rectification — ask us to correct inaccurate or incomplete data.

  • Erasure ("Right to be Forgotten") — ask us to delete your personal data.

  • Restriction — ask us to pause using your data while we look into something.

  • Portability — get your data in a format you can take to another provider.

  • Objection — object to us using your data for marketing or certain other purposes.

Right of access

You can ask for a copy of the personal data we hold about you, along with details of how we use it. This is sometimes called a Subject Access Request.

Right to rectification

If any of your details are wrong or out of date, you can ask us to correct them. Some details — like your email address — you can update yourself; see How to update your email address. For anything you can't change in your account settings, contact us using the details below.

Right to erasure (Right to be Forgotten)

You can ask us to delete your personal data. This is a more thorough, slower process than simply closing your account, and it's irreversible.

Once we've verified your identity, we'll begin processing your request. It usually takes a few business days, though we'll always respond within a calendar month, in line with data protection law.

While we'd be happy to delete everything, we're required to retain certain information to meet our obligations to the FCA and other legal requirements. We'll only keep the minimum necessary, and we'll let you know if anything is being retained and why.

Right to restriction of processing

You can ask us to limit how we use your data — for example, while we look into a query you've raised about it.

Right to data portability

You can ask for the personal data you've given us in a structured, commonly used, machine-readable format, so you can move it to another organisation if you wish.

Right to object

You can object to us processing your data in certain circumstances, including for direct marketing. If you just want to stop marketing emails or calls, the quickest route is your Preference Centre rather than a formal objection request.

How to request any of these

  1. Open the Messenger in the bottom-right corner of your account and start a conversation with Fin, our AI Assistant, or email us at datarequest@moneysupermarket.com.

  2. Tell us which right you'd like to exercise, and include the email address linked to your account.

  3. We may need to verify your identity before we can proceed.

We'll always respond within a calendar month, in line with data protection legislation.
