Falling victim to fraud can be a worrying and stressful experience. At MoneySuperMarket, we take the security of our customers' personal and financial information very seriously and are here to support you if you believe you may have been a victim of fraud.
Here's what you should do if you think you've been a victim of fraud:
Report it
Report the fraud to your bank and the police. You can report this to the police via Action Fraud.
Your bank will be able to tell you what you should do next and how to protect yourself from further fraud.
You may also wish to contact Cifas, a not-for-profit fraud prevention organisation. Cifas will be able to apply a Protective Registration warning on your credit report, for an administration fee. This will tell lenders that you think your data could be at further risk of fraudulent access, so they can make extra checks to protect you in the future.
You can get the Protective Registration flag added to your report straight away by phoning 0330 100 0180 (and you’ll also need to confirm in writing). You can also apply online at www.cifas.org.uk/pr_for_individuals.
Monitor your accounts
Keep a close eye on your bank and credit card statements to spot any suspicious activity. If you notice anything that doesn't look right, report it to your bank immediately.
Check your credit file
Regularly check your credit file for any suspicious activity, such as applications for credit in your name that you didn't make. You can obtain a free copy of your statutory credit report from one of the UK's credit reference agencies, these are TransUnion, Equifax and Experian.
Change your passwords
If you believe your personal information has been compromised, change your passwords for all of your online accounts. Make sure to use strong and unique passwords that are difficult for fraudsters to guess.
You may find password managers such as 1Password and Bitwarden useful if you want to ensure your passwords are extra secure.
Stay vigilant
Be cautious of any unsolicited phone calls, emails or letters that ask for your personal or financial information. Always check the identity of the sender before sharing any information. If you receive a call claiming to be from your bank, hang up and call the number on the back of your bank card to make sure you’re talking to the right people.
Protect your computer
Make sure that your computer has up-to-date antivirus software and a firewall to protect against malware and hacking attempts.
By following these steps, you can help to prevent fraud and protect yourself. At MoneySuperMarket, we’re committed to providing a secure platform for our customers and we’ll continue to work hard to protect you from fraud and other security threats. But, if you’re still concerned about your security or have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact our customer support team. We’ll do everything we can to help.
